My artwork expresses my fascination with nature and the environment. When considering nature, I do not try to imitate or duplicate the initial aesthetic experience; rather, I seek to reexamine the experience through my own voice. Through such visual explorations, I become the creator of the painting and the author of its meaning. Moved by the natural light and organic shapes I observe in the places I visit seeking inspiration, I try to capture the essence and mood of the place, as well as to formulate a visual interpretation of what lies before me. My passion for the environment derives from the precarious condition of our planet and from my urgent desire to salvage the environment before it is too late. By recording visually all that inspires me in the natural world, I attempt to document the beauty that still exists, perhaps as a legacy for future generations. I work with handmade paper for two reasons. First,
the texture of pulp provides an almost three-dimensional quality to the
paintings’ surface, thus mimicking nature in all its splendor. As
the creative process unfolds, the pulp takes on a marvelous life of its
own; its unique properties remain evident in the work and help to define
it. And when these properties come together as one unit or composition,
a work of art exists. Second, handmade paper has not been widely used
as a painting medium. I am constantly discovering its potential and being
challenged by its capacities. As a result, I have become a pioneer in
this exciting medium.
